They Said They Didn’t Want Anything… So I Gave Them This Instead
Every year, it’s the same thing.
“Don’t get me anything.”
“I really don’t need more stuff.”
“Just spend time with us, that’s all I want.”
If you’ve ever tried to buy a gift for your mum or dad as they’ve gotten older, you’ve probably heard this too. And maybe, like me, you’ve found yourself wandering the shops or scrolling online, trying to find something that feels meaningful—but not knowing what that actually is.
So this year, I tried something different.
I gave them their story.
Not Just Another Gift—A Moment to Be Heard
It started with a conversation.
I asked my dad about the first job he ever had. That led to stories about growing up, getting his first car, and the strange way he met my mum (it involved a flat tyre and a lost dog—who knew?).
The more he talked, the more I realised:
There’s so much I don’t know about the life he lived before I existed.
I didn’t want to lose these stories. Not just the facts—but his way of telling them. His expressions. The pauses. The moments where he got choked up without meaning to.
Why I Chose to Capture His Story on Film
I’d seen people write books or collect family photos, but I wanted something more alive. Something we could return to. Something my children could watch one day and feel like they knew him—not just as “Grandad,” but as the young man who once chased dreams, made mistakes, and tried his best.
That’s when I found Heritage House Studio. They help people create video memoirs—beautiful, heartfelt films that preserve a person’s voice, memories, and presence.
It wasn’t flashy or dramatic. Just real. Thoughtful. Human.
It Turned Out to Be the Gift We All Needed
We filmed over a couple of days, in my parents’ home. They made tea. He told stories. My mum joined in for some of it, laughing and correcting details the way couples do.
When we watched the final film together, there were tears. And laughter. And long pauses where no one spoke—because we were all just feeling it.
It didn’t just capture his life.
It brought our family closer.
If You’re Thinking About Doing Something Like This…
I can’t recommend it enough. Especially if your parent has been through a lot, or lived a long, full life that’s never really been documented. Especially if they’ve said, “I don’t want anything.”
Because this isn’t “anything.”
It’s everything.
Their story. Their voice. Their legacy.
And if you’re not sure where to begin, Heritage House Studio makes it easy. You don’t need to write scripts or ask perfect questions. They guide the whole process—from planning to filming to editing. All you need is the intention.
Want to Explore It? Just Start with a Conversation
There’s no pressure or commitment. Just a free, thoughtful consultation where you can ask questions and see if it feels like the right fit.
Your parent may still say, “I don’t need anything this year.”
And that’s okay.
Because what you’ll give them isn’t just a gift.
It’s the honor of being seen—and the peace of knowing they’ll be remembered.
